IAP Intensive Care Chapter
IAP Intensive Care Chapter – India
In the past decade, Pediatric Critical Care has experienced rapid growth in India, yet it remains a developing field within the Indian healthcare landscape, with limited facilities providing satisfactory critical care for children in need. To address this gap and promote the field of pediatric intensive care in India, the IAP Intensive Care Chapter was established in 1998.
Initially, Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) were established as extensions of Pediatrics departments in cities like Mumbai, Chandigarh, Chennai, and Delhi. Subsequently, more PICUs were set up, leading to the formation of the IAP Intensive Care Chapter, a branch of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics dedicated to the educational aspects of PICU care. Fellowships were initiated in various hospitals, and the College of Pediatric Intensive Care was founded to oversee educational initiatives. This progress eventually led to the introduction of DM (Doctorate of Medicine) courses in pediatric intensive care by universities, creating a comprehensive pediatric intensive care program in the country.
